It was rare for Michael to get off early from work. Whenever it did happen, though, it always felt like an answer to a prayer. This was one of those nights.

He was exhausted, not just from working several long shifts in a row but also from having more than his fair share of difficult tables. All he wanted to do was go home, retreat to his attic room, and sleep undisturbed for about ten hours. Hopefully by the time he woke up, the world would be back on its axis again.

Walking toward the door, he paused when he saw his manager standing by the door to the kitchen. Kim looked as tired as he felt. Actually, she looked like she would give back the day’s pay if she could leave too. As anxious as he was to get out of there, Michael couldn’t pretend he hadn’t seen her.

“Hey, is everything all right?” he asked.

“Hmm?” His question seemed to jar her out of her daze. She shook her head as if she was trying to clear it. “Oh yeah, Mike. I’m fine. It’s just been a long night.” After looking around, she added, “We’ve had a crazy crew in here, haven’t we?”

He knew who she was speaking about. Usually everyone dreaded the big groups of college kids on spring break. They were notorious for needing separate checks and leaving next to no tips. For him, the worst groups to wait on were the big extended families. For some reason, there would be tension from the beginning, and then everyone seemed to get more on edge as the night wore on. He hadn’t waited on a big party where someone hadn’t complained about the bill—or asked him to refigure the separate checks.

He’d waited on a fifteen-person table that evening where it seemed each family member was determined to behave badly. Two of the men had gotten into such a bad argument, they left before they’d finished eating.

Things had only gone downhill after that. A few of the women had burst into tears, which was followed by a large drink order, arguments about dessert, and then a half dozen questions about the bill. Whether the remaining family members were upset that they had to pay for the two dinners that had been abandoned or they were just being jerks, they’d made Michael miserable. They’d even had the nerve to say they didn’t trust his calculations and asked Kim to redo everything.

“At least they paid the bill,” he said.

She looked at him sympathetically. “They gave you a tip too. I didn’t expect that.”

“Me neither.” It wasn’t a great tip—only 10 percent. But it was better than nothing.

“I am sorry they were so rude to you. Usually I would have told them what I thought about their attitude, but I just wanted them to leave.”

“I wanted them to leave too.” He shrugged. “It was no fault of yours. It just is how it is, ain’t so?”

She nodded. “Have you been thinking about what I asked?”

Kim had asked if he’d like a small promotion.
